1.Northern:- The northern part runs from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador to the Hudson River region.
The region consisted of Long Range Mountains and Annieopsquotch Mountain which falls under Newfoundland, Chic-Choc Mountains and Notre Dame region falls under Quebec and New Brunswick, some mountains and ranges elsewhere in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick,
the Longfellow Mountains and valleys in Maine, the White Mountains in New Hampshire region, the Green Mountains in Vermont region, and The Berkshires in Massachusetts and Connecticut region.
The Metacomet Mountains falls under the region of Connecticut.
South-central Massachusetts which vested in the Appalachian region, is a younger system of all but not geologically associated with the Appalachians.
The Monteregian Hills, which cross the Green Mountains in Quebec, are also not geologically associated with the Appalachians.
2. Central:- The central part goes from the Hudson Valley to the New River of Great Kanawha region running through Virginia and West Virginia.
It consists of the Valley of Ridges between the Allegheny Front of the Allegheny Plateau and the Great Appalachian Valley of the New York–New Jersey Highlands and also comprises the Taconic Mountains in New York, and a vast area of the Blue Ridge.
3. Southern:- The southern part runs from the New River. It consists of extension of the Blue Ridge, which is divided into the Western Blue Ridge called Unaka Front and the Eastern Blue Ridge Front, the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, and the Cumberland Plateau.
The Adirondack Mountains in New York are considered part of the Appalachian mountain ranges but, geologically , are a southern prolongation of the Laurentian Mountains of Canada.
In addition to the true folded mountains, known as the ridge and valley state, the area of dissected plateau to the north and west of the mountains is grouped with the Appalachians.
The dividing plateau region, are also called "mountains," especially in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia region, and while the ridges are not high, the terrain is extremely rugged.
In Ohio and New York, some of the plateau has been glaciated, and these regions are usually referred to as hill country instead of mountains.
