 Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, known for its stunning landscapes, is home to several beautiful lakes, which contribute to the region's natural charm. Here are some notable lakes located specifically within Kangra district:


1. Kareri Lake


Location: Near the village of Kareri, about 9 km north of Dharamshala.


Altitude: 2,934 meters (9,626 feet) above sea level.


Description: A high-altitude, glacial lake nestled in the Dhauladhar mountain range. The lake is surrounded by dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron. It is a popular trekking destination and attracts nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The trek to the lake passes through scenic, lush landscapes and offers panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range.


Best Time to Visit: April to June and September to November.



2. Dal Lake


Location: Near the village of Tota Rani, about 11 km from Dharamshala.


Altitude: 1,775 meters (5,823 feet).


Description: This is a small but serene lake surrounded by dense Deodar trees, offering a peaceful environment. The lake is known for its religious and cultural significance, with several legends associated with it. A popular picnic spot, Dal Lake is often visited by pilgrims, as it holds spiritual importance. The lake also has a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on its banks.


Best Time to Visit: March to June and September to November.



3. Pong Dam Lake (Maharana Pratap Sagar)


Location: Near the town of Sujanpur Tira, about 25 km from Dharamshala.


Altitude: 450 meters (1,476 feet).


Description: An artificial reservoir created by the Pong Dam on the Beas River. The lake is spread over a vast area and is an important water source for irrigation and hydropower generation. It is also a renowned bird sanctuary, especially popular among bird watchers as it attracts migratory birds during the winter months. The lake is surrounded by hills and provides beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.


Best Time to Visit: November to February, when migratory birds arrive in large numbers.
